culture & history

Wharf to Wharf Walk crosses the ancient lands of the Yuin people, traditional custodians of the ancient land and sea country along which the walk follows. Natural landscapes provided sustenance, shelter and cultural importance, and the significance of these sites remain today. European settlement in the 1800s marked the commencement of activity such as farming, logging and steam navigation, with evidence of these activities found along the walk.

tale of two wharfs

Merimbula Wharf and Tathra Wharf are icons of the Sapphire Coast, two historical timber wharfs built to service the famous Steam Navigation era of the 1800s that ultimately linked the far south coast to the rest of Australia. Today, the wharfs are great places to throw a line, grab a coffee or meal and take in the stunning views of Merimbula Bay and Tathra Beach.

EXPLORE the Region

Wharf to Wharf Walk is located on the Sapphire Coast on the southern end of New South Wales, halfway between Melbourne and Sydney, three hours from Canberra. The region stretches from Bermagui in the north to Wonboyn in the south and is made up of approximately 75% National Park and some of Australia’s most untouched coast.
