Wharf to Wharf Walk is located on the Sapphire Coast NSW, approximately halfway between Melbourne and Sydney, three hours from Canberra. The Sapphire Coast region stretches from Bermagui in the north to Wonboyn in the south and is made up of 75% National Park and some of Australia’s most untouched coast. The area is a natural playground for nature enthusiasts, with ample opportunity for bushwalking, kayaking and canoeing, fishing, birdwatching, camping, surfing, whale watching and mountain biking.

The Sapphire Coast is also one of the most award-winning oyster producing regions in Australia and no visit is complete without a trip to one of the local oyster “farm gates” to pick up a dozen harvested straight from the pristine lakes and estuaries. Combine your visit with the famous whale watching season in the spring, or with one of the region’s intriguing arts, music and culture events and festivals.

If your trip is all about nature and walking, you are spoilt for choice with 8 National Park and Nature Reserve areas located in the region including: Bournda National Park; Mimosa Rocks National Park; Ben Boyd National Park; South East Forests National Park; Wadbilliga National Park; Nadgee Nature Reserve; Mt Imlay National Park; Biamanga National Park. Notable multi-day walks included the 30km Light to Light walk in Ben Boyd National Park and the 55km Nadgee Wilderness Walk in Nadgee Nature Reserve.

Popular camping spots in National Parks include Gillards Beach, Aragunnu Beach, Saltwater Creek and Bittangabee Bay (bookings required). Hobart Beach Campground is the only National Park camping option available along the Wharf to Wharf Walk.

Getting Here

Getting here is easy, with self-drive, flying and public transport options available. The closest airport is Merimbula Airport, conveniently located just over 5km from Merimbula Wharf.


Qantas and Rex both offer flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Merimbula airport.

Weather & Seasons

The Sapphire Coast enjoys a temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters making it an all-year-round outdoor adventure destination. The average temperature is between 24°C and 16°C in summer, and between 7°C and 17°C in winter. There is approximately 5-6 days of rain per month. At the height of summer, there is around 14 hours of daylight. Thanks to the Eastern Australian Current, the water tends to stay warm right through autumn.
